Salary: $71,955 to $89,953 annually (To commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN compensation policy)

Position Summary

The DHP is a data lake that aggregates, curates and exports data sources across the hospital. It is a robust and scalable platform that facilitates research and quality of care improvement initiatives across UHN. Our data sources span everything from standard electronic medical record entries and lab results to DNA sequencing data and diagnostic imaging. Our goal is to provide a platform that effectively integrates and facilitates the analysis of big data for these purposes.

As a member of the DHP team, you will have the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process during the design and development of our applications. You will specialize in importing data from hospital application into UHN DHP and delivering aggregate data to help clinicians and scientists streamline clinical workflows and research, enabling faster and better treatments through the use of computational and statistical methods. We have a heavy preference for using open-source tools to build in-house software solutions. Our architecture favours the microservice design pattern, with JSON for data-interchange format. Our primary data-store is a MongoDB cluster, though we also make use of SQL and MinIO. Your experience in other programming languages such as Python may be applicable. Our platform environment is managed by Kubernetes, and applications are run in Docker-based containers.

Are you collaborative, analytical and passionate about technology in the healthcare industry? The DHP Team is currently recruiting a Data Engineer. Principle responsibilities include building and running SQL queries for efficiently pulling data from hospital database systems, as well as setting up database views for projects that require access to regularly updated data. The Data Engineer will liaise across various UHN stakeholders to ensure that projects follow UHN policies, have the appropriate approvals, and meet all project specifications. The candidate for this role will possess a diverse skill set including advanced knowledge of databases, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a background in data & analytics within a hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal/external resources to acquire data from Epic Clarity & Caboodle
  • Build or modify Epic Clarity & Caboodle database views for projects that require regularly updated data
  • Build or modify database queries to pull data from non-Epic databases and NoSQL MongoDB
  • Identify and troubleshoot data quality issues
  • Act as a primary support contact for Epic reporting needs
  • Review peer reports for validity, accuracy and completeness
  • Identify, communicate, and resolve risks related to Epic Cogito data extract activities and initiatives

Qualifications

  • Certification in Cogito Fundamentals, Clarity Data Model, Caboodle Data Model, Clinical Data Model certifications is strongly preferred
  • If not already certified, then certification must be completed during the probationary period
  • Familiarity with database technology such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle DB
  • Advanced knowledge of building and optimizing SQL queries
  • Intermediate knowledge of NoSQL MongoDB databases is strongly preferred
  • Experience in data & analytics within a health care environment strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of healthcare data sources and standards is preferred
  • Ability to lead requirements gathering sessions, document user requirements and translate them into useful solutions
  • Ability to analyze data, problem-solve, and clearly communicate solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Python/pandas experience preferred for data processing/cleaning?
