The Opportunity

This position works out of our Ottawa office, in the Point of Care, Diagnostics division. We're empowering smarter medical and economic decision making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Our Point of Care diagnostic portfolio spans key health and therapeutic areas, including Chemistry, Electrolytes, Hematology, Blood Gases, Coagulation, Endocrinology, Cardiac Markers, Neurology, and Informatics. As a member of Chemistry Engineering, you will contribute to the team's success by supporting continuity of supply efforts for chemistry accepted materials by performing material qualifications for new vendor lots of incoming materials. You will also assist with experiments aimed to determine the source of variability affecting different vendor lots of the same material.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with material management and continuity of supply efforts for chemistry-based materials.

  • Perform regular cycle counting and monitor expiring chemical inventory to support accurate material run-out dates.

  • Work closely with supply chain and external vendors to bring in samples of new vendor lots for qualification.

  • Support material specification document updates in response to supplier change notifications.

  • Perform material qualifications and in-lab testing of new vendor lots of incoming materials.

  • Prepare work orders (RECs) and work instructions (ELNs, QMNs and MMIs) for operators in multiple cross-functional areas.

  • Coordinate experiments with engineering support, QA, operations, and planning staff.

  • Manage documentation updates through the Design Control System by drafting. document updates and driving approvals in the electronic document system; consistently apply Quality Systems requirements and procedures.

  • Work independently in accordance with standard practices, policies, and precedents; seek direction when needed.

  • Plan/organize work/project assignments of a substantial variety and complexity. Maintain schedule for key work packages. Establish priorities for individual projects and assignments. Record data accurately and keep task logs.

  • Gather and analyze data to draw sound conclusions and facilitate data-driven decisions.

  • Prioritize problems and participate in investigations and root cause analysis to identify sources of variability impacting product performance, when implementing different vendor lots of chemistry accepted materials.

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with planning, operators, equipment technologists and group members of related areas and managers.

  • Communicate ideas and suggestions for improving processes; actively participate in implementing solutions.

  • Maintain contact with managers and group members from related functional areas, including product engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance and test.

  • Understand and comply with Quality and EH&S policies, procedures, and guidelines. Safeguard the environment and facilitate a safe and healthy workplace culture.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering.

  • 1 + years relevant work experience in a technical job, preferred.

  • Ability to design experiments, analyze and interpret data and document conclusions with appropriate attention to detail; experience using statistical methods is an asset.

  • Analytical skills, creativity and innovative approach to problem solving.

  • Ability to determine required analysis to make practical, objective decisions about the best solutions to problems.

  • Effective at planning and coordinating, with excellent time-management skills.

  • Ability to build and use an effective network of people inside and/or outside the organization to give and receive information and to accomplish work objectives.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; able to deal effectively with people on all organizational levels and work in a team environment across departments.

  • Enthusiasm and propensity to continuous learning and experimentation.

  • Resourcefulness, ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

  • Familiarity with any of the following is an asset: analytical chemistry, chemistry techniques and equipment, process engineering, root cause analysis, statistics, and statistical software packages such as Minitab and SAS JMP, ISO/FDA regulations, risk management/FMEA methods, GMP and LEAN Six Sigma manufacturing principles.
